Heart of the River ~ Plein Air 2026

Each June, the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester becomes home to the celebrated Heart of the River Collection, the signature exhibition of the Gloucester Arts Festival.

During Plein Air Week, June 6–12, visitors can stop by the museum to view fresh works as they are completed by invited artists painting throughout Gloucester and the surrounding region. Following the week-long competition, the finished Heart of the River Collection will be installed and unveiled at the Plein Air Gala & Awards on June 13. Featuring scenes of local waterways, landscapes, architecture, and community life, the collection captures the beauty and character of Virginia’s Middle Peninsula through original plein air paintings.
