This Is Us: Visions of Virginia

The Kacey Sydnor Carneal “This Is Us: Visions of Virginia” exhibition opens at the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester on August 1, 2025.

Kacey Carneal began painting at age 50, forging a remarkable career as a self-taught artist whose joyful yet piercing visual language captured the essence of identity, community, and care for the world around her. Working in oil on wood or canvas—and often extending the painting into the frame itself—Kacey brought an immersive, deeply personal vision to life through her signature style.

Devoted to her craft, she painted eight hours a day, seven days a week, always accompanied by music. Her art reflects the people, places, and causes she held dear, often layered with themes of justice, belonging, and the beauty of everyday life. In doing so, her work gently invites viewers to see the world and themselves with renewed empathy.

In this exhibition, Kacey’s work powerfully engages with the themes of equality, climate, and home, offering a lasting reminder of how one artist’s truth can illuminate our shared humanity.

Join us at the Fine Arts Museum of Gloucester, Tuesday through Friday 10AM - 5PM. We are located in Main Street Center at 6894 Main Street, Gloucester, VA - between the Post Office and Dollar General.
